“…she was basically writing checks to herself.”

This should have been an easy catch.  Any small organization that has a checking account needs to have someone OTHER THAN the person writing checks reconcile the bank statement monthly.  If someone handed you a checkbook for a small organization, and you:

1.  Wrote the checks, 2.  Signed the checks, 3. Received the bank statement, 4.  No one was looking over your shoulder, 5. You needed to “borrow” the money for an emergency, 6. You would put it back when you caught up on your bills…it was just temporary until you got back on your feet…

Have someone other than the check writer receive the statement and reconcile the account monthly.  You will be doing your volunteer organization a big favor.

Woman charged in missing money case

By Justin Graves The Cullman Times

CULLMAN, AL — A woman who law enforcement officials believe embezzled thousands of dollars from a local youth sports organization now faces felony charges.

Illena Michelle Flanigan of Hanceville, was arrested earlier this month by the Hanceville Police Department. She was charged with first-degree theft of property and multiple counts of forgery.

Flanigan, 32, was booked into the Cullman County Detention Center, where she was released on bond.

Flanigan, who was the secretary for the Hanceville Youth Football Association, is accused of stealing more than $9,000 in funds from the organization.

“She was in charge of making deposits and managing the money,” Hanceville PD officer Jimmy Rodgers said. “It appears that she was basically writing checks to herself.”
